Shibamata Taishakuten

Katsushika-Shibamata has come into even greater fame as the set of the movie "Otoko wa Tsurai Yo."

There is a ferry crossing, called the “Yagiri-no-watashi,” which is situated on the western bank of the Edogawa River. It connects to the opposite shores of Matsudo City of Chiba, and Yagiri. The area prospered as the temple town associated with Taishakuten.

Taishakuten (officially called Kyoeizan Daikyo-ji Temple), is also known as the "temple of carving" due to the gorgeous wooden carvings that grace its halls.

Some 40 shops are crammed into both sides of the narrow street, which runs approximately 200 meters. The area, known as Tora san’s home town (from the movie “Otoko wa Tsurai Yo”), features the distinct flavor of the traditional period town. It has a river fish restaurant built during the Taisho Period, two dumpling shops established during the Meiji and Taisho Periods, plus an old candy store where you can hear the candy being cut, and more.
